21ST CENTURY MUM
Hip Hooray! The first few weeks of January are over, longer daylight hours are creeping in and our routines are back in full swing.
Even when we put our best foot forward it is not always easy to keep heads above water when you are juggling work, children, husband and a household. So how do some people make it look so easy? As women we tend to put a lot of pressure on ourselves, child care-taker, cook, social secretary, driver, personal valet, tutor, entertainer, all whilst trying to earn a living. So, this edition we are dedicating to helping the 21st CENTURY MUM, not only do we have STORCX tips & guides but we have the wonderful, talented and hugely inspirational Gabriela Hersham mother of 2 and founder of the critically acclaimed shared office space Huckletree giving her Q&A on how to be a 21st Century Mum.
STORCX TOP TIPS FOR THE 21ST CENTURY MUM
Get down with the Apps!
So, one of the good things about being in the 21st Century at this late stage is the wonders of technology. We have increased pressure of emails on constant drip, and being available ALL the time, but thankfully to balance this out, the gods at Apple made APPS and some very clever tech heads made some super helpful apps to help us mums, which any 21st Century mum would be lost without, so these are our top Apps:
Ocado (you never have to set foot in a shopping aisle again)
Cozi (no matter how many kids you have your diary can be shared & scheduled with your eyes closed)
Free Now (never waste your precious time queuing for a taxi again)
Hoop (never wonder what you are going to do with the kids ever again – best guide to what’s on in your area at any date)
Headspace (when you just need to switch off for some you time)
Urban Massage (To be used at the end of a killer week to prepare you for the next)
Secret Spa (Multi task at your computer while your pedi is done in the comfort of your own home)
Storcx (Save time and worry, stop running around buying presents for teachers, kids and peers, and group gift on-line – also ticks the ethically conscious box by saving plastic and paper!)
Task Rabbit (Get help with any task, whether it is cleaning, wall mounting or heavy lifting. Task Rabbit will find your man or women!)
2. LEARN TO ASK FOR HELP
Why is it that some of us are unable to ever ask for help? Is it that we see it as a sign of weakness? A sign that we actually can’t do it all, all the time?! This needs to STOP right now!As women we need to look out for each other, the reality is we cannot always do EVERYTHING by ourselves all the time even though we are amazing multi-tasker’s… Let’s cut ourselves some slack – it is ok to ask for help sometimes, and trust me most women WILL understand and only be happy to help out on that extra pick up, or drop off, or sending that piece of homework that little Freddie left at school. Also, by asking sometimes, it lets other 21st Century mums know that they can ask you too, hence opening up the world of sharing duties and tasks and allowing us to relax just that little bit more.
Do you ever look around your living space and marvel at the amount of accumulated STUFF you have floating around in every nook and cranny? Beit lost pieces of lego, finished books, unopened mail and bundles of kid’s art that you just can’t bear to throw away? Well I’m sorry to say but you need to get Marie Kondo on these things NOW! The best-selling author of the Magic Art of Tidying Up said it best when she hailed: “that a decluttered house may also lead to a clear state of mind”. Amen to that. Let’s face it, ‘a place for everything and everything in its place’ is more effective when you can actually see what it is you are looking for. We love doodle nest to convert your kids artwork into coffee table books.
4. FAMILY EATING
So, another time saving marvel is to remember as your kids get older you can actually share meals and eat the same things. Yes, just cook one meal for your family. remember that? The wonderful Miriam Cooper at Mimi’s Bowl tells us best how to do it, by providing wholesome home-made recipes that the whole family can share. She also collates the most wonderful edits at those stressful times of year, like Halloween and Christmas, to make your life easier with her handpicked favourites for gifts, clothes and outdoor ideas.
Meet Gabriela Hersham – the female entrepreneur behind the innovative co-working business space Huckletree:
Determined, quirky and passionate enough to achieve the impossible in such a saturated market – Gabriela did her Bachelor’s in Arts at Reagent’s University, London and furthered her studies at University College London where she studied French and Arabic.
S: TELL US ABOUT HUCKLETREE? HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE CONCEPT? HOW LONG YOU HAVE BEEN RUNNING? START-UP SOLO OR WITH A BUSINESS PARTNER?
GH: Huckletree is a pan-European workspace and growth accelerator, founded in 2014 in London. Today, we have created hubs across Europe for over 2000 members.
Our workspace is our core offering, we with an in-house team dedicated to helping our member businesses grow, an accelerator programme for pre-seed stage tech start-ups and a start-up school for aspiring entrepreneurs.
The journey of Huckletree has been an incredible one for me personally – going from having no idea how to build, run and scale a business to an organisation with 8 locations in various cities, close to 2000 members and just shy of 100 employees.
Andrew (our COO and my cofounder) and I have a great way of being brutally honest with each other, but it’s taken years to create that ‘safe space.’
S: I HEAR YOU HAVE GONE GLOBAL!? HOW DOES THIS CHANGE THE COMPANY?
GH: There is always a lot of pressure when a launching in new markets, which is why we’ve always approached expansion with care. London is our home city, but have launched in Dublin, Manchester and now Oslo. My biggest take away is simple – do more research than you think necessary and find yourself the very best person that you can to run each new market. Without him or her, it’ll all become wobbly very fast.
S: YOU ARE ONE OF THESE MUMS THAT DOES IT ALL, HOW MANY CHILDREN DO YOU HAVE AND HOW DO YOU COPE WITH WORK, LIFE AND CHILDREN?
GH: I have two sons, Jack and Andrea – both of whom stole my heart the minute they arrived on the scene. I don’t think I do it all though – I often look at the mothers around me (e.g. you two!) in admiration. The time you spend taking the children everywhere, the level of involvement you enjoy in their education and in their social lives is an inspiration to witness. I just focus on spending the best time possible when I am with them – at the moment I’m really throwing myself into maternity leave as I know I’ll never get this time back.
S: HOW DO YOU FIND TIME FOR YOURSELF?
GH: Right now, I don’t, and the reason is guilt. When I’m at home with the children I always feel I need to be with them, whether that’s feeding them, bathing them, playing or reading. I know that this needs to change. I need to get comfortable with not spending my every free minute with them – it’s not healthy for either of us and you can’t pour from an empty cup.
S: CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE A BIT ABOUT YOUR WORKSHOPS AT HUCKLETREE?
GH: Workshops, events and our programming schedule are an important part of life at Huckletree for all our members. In a given week, every location will host social events, skill-based workshops, panel discussions, pitch practise, VC meetups, meditation, yoga, leadership talks, lunch & learn sessions, tech trend presentations… the list goes on. The reason is really simple; we believe in lifelong learning as an important element of the Future of Work and we want our members to have daily opportunities to develop themselves.
S: WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON GIFTING IN THE WORK PLACE?
GH: We frequently give gifts to our team members, most frequently to celebrate milestones such as weddings or welcoming babies. Individual teams are also frequently gifting for birthdays or goodbye gifts and it’s always a challenge to decide what to buy!
S: HAVE EVER CONTRIBUTED TO GROUP GIFT? WHAT WAS IT?
GH: Yes, often. In our generation where we’d rather have the ‘One Thing’ or that one experience rather than many smaller items, amongst my friends we are frequently coming up with unique gifting ideas for whoever is celebrating next. Most recently, I participated in purchasing a personalised piece of art for my cousin as she was getting married.
S: WHAT IS THE BEST PRESENT YOU HAVE RECEIVED?
GH: Everything my husband has ever bought me
