Happy Reading, Love Storcx xx

With autumn comes not only a new season but new changes and challenges.   Whatever the last few months has bought for us, for most September symbolises new beginnings and a new routine post summer vacations and the start of a new school year.  Whether we are back to the office after WFH rules are relaxed and adapting to new office social distancing measures implemented, one thing is for sure we are all itching for a sense of normality, putting on real clothes without lycra, handing in our notice as teachers, and re-integrating into the real professional and social world. The question is will we remember how to? The simple task of putting an outfit together may seem like a distant memory, heels, pack lunches, juggling school runs, clubs and play dates, the chaotic pre-covid world we have started to miss, for some may be ringing alarm bells. So this edition we turn to the inspirational, beautiful, calm cool and collected Samantha Cameron to talk to us about reintegration to normal life in a post Covid world.

We will also be exploring the idea of new norms and how we navigate around getting to work safely. It’s clear with increased congestion charge price and times, increased bus and tube fares and the ever growing visible cycle lanes on our roads we are being encouraged to move by foot or 2 wheels rather than public transport or even by car. So with this in mind our gifting edit this month will be on travel friendly ideas for work and Storcx will be offering our guide to the best Podcasts to listen to while getting to our destinations outside the comfort of our home.

SAMANTHA CAMERON
Creative director, Desinger & Founder of CEFINN

CEFINN IS AN UNUSAL NAME, HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THAT NAME?

It is the from the initials of my children and their surname – Cameron, Elwen, Florence, Ivan, Nancy, Cameron

BEFORE CEFINN YOU WERE THE CREATIVE DIRECTOR OF SMYTHONS ON BOND STREET AND YOUR HUSBAND WAS THE PRIME MINISTER.  DID BEING IN THE PUBLIC EYE INSPIRE YOU YO SET UP CEFINN?

It was really before that; as a busy working mother, partner and professional creative I was frustrated by not being able to find versatile, contemporary priced, high quality, go-to fashion staples to take me through breakfast with the family and a day in the office followed by an evening out with my friends.  I wanted to design a collection that had a very modern fashion edge but was easy to wear, style and look after, (the majority of the collection is washable), I wanted to make it simple for women to feel fashionable, feminine and confident in the office but to be able to go out after without feeling corporate or having to change.

THE SIX MONTHS OR SO HAS TURNED EVERYONES WORLD UPSIDE DOWN IN ONE WAY OR ANOTHER.  WHAT HAS YOUR BIGGEST STURGGLES BEEN THROUGH THIS TIME?

Re-structuring the business very fast as we went into lockdown.  I was extremely lucky as our nanny locked down with us, because she was nervous of going back to her father in Glasgow and bringing Covid with her. She was amazing at home schooling my youngest daughter Florence.  I was so busy coping with the business I don’t think that there was any way I could have done both without her help; I might well have had to give the business up.  In that respect it has been an incredibly difficult time for working parents or any parents with young school age children.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST INSPIRATION?

My husband has been incredible during lockdown, he was supposed to be travelling a lot for work which was obviously then cancelled, he is an amazing cook and shopped for all our food and between conference calls cooked virtually every meal, (and we sat down to eat a proper meal as a family for lunch and dinner every day), for the whole of lockdown, (I did a lot of washing up and cleaning!).

HAS COVID-19 CHANGED THE WAY YOU WORK?

Yes definitely, we have all been working remotely and it really shows that working from home can work.  We will definitely be pro the team at Cefinn working more flexibly even after Covid is not an issue anymore.

WILL WE SEE SOME COVID-INSPIRED FASHION FROM CEFINN?

Yes, we have expanded our knitwear collection and have just launched an amazing jumpsuit that is very easy and effortless to wear if you are relaxing or working from home but also would look great at the office or out in the evening.

HAVE YOU NOTICED A CHANGE IN THE SORT OF CLOTHING THAT COMSUMERS ARE BUYING?

Yes, our customers were initially buying less dresses, particularly for that time of year.  Luckily we had recently broadened the range and now do shirting, knitwear and silk blouses which have been selling well.

WHAT ARE YOUR WORKING FROM HOME DO’S AND DON’TS?

I pretend I am going to the office, I get up at the same time and dress and do my hair and make up in the same way I would do normally, our first office meeting is on Teams at 9.15am each day to keep us in the normal routine.

HOW DO YOU JUGGLE CHILDREN, HUSBAND AND WORK?

Go to bed early, get up very early, stay fit by running outside at the weekends, (I don’t have the time to go to the gym/classes etc).  Write lot of lists, (I like the Trello App), sit down with all the family for meals every day – it gives you are really good chance to see how everyone is doing especially now I have teenagers.

WHAT IS THE ONE THING YOU CANNOT LIVE WITOUT?

PG Tips tea with Marmite on toast.

GOOD READ?

Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese

DO YOU HAVE A NEW HOBBY SINCE LOCKDOWN?

Looking after 6 pure breed, very eccentric bantams, named and adored by all the family.  I have got very good at cutting the head feathers of the Polish Bantams so they can see properly.  We bought them at one day old, the day before lockdown and they lived in our hallway until they were 6 weeks old.

WHAT IS THE BEST GIFT YOU EVER RECEIVED?

A 1971 Fiat Cinquecento with red leather seats from my husband on my birthday when we were first married.  I had fallen in love with them in Rome on our honeymoon.
