Welcome to our STORCX special on Sustainability & Group Gifting. With Christmas around the corner we are dedicating this edition to the benefits of group gifting and the do’s and don’ts of money pooling.
Hoorah – Group Gifting is no longer a faux pas – in fact pooling together for you’re your friends, colleagues & year groups for investment presents, and items of real value has become common practice; like brushing your teeth or combing your hair – it’s just something you do. Not only does it make a positive contribution towards the fight against climate change, by decreasing waste, but it is also making a contribution to encourage real craftmanship and collecting items of value. Long gone are the days of small gesture gifts cluttering up you limited storage space – no more awkward embarrassed thank-yous on receiving a gift you don’t like, but now you can receive exactly what you want!
The simplicity of the process is that it can be used for yourself, friends. Teachers & children, absolutely anyone.
“To help you navigate your way around gifting this coming season here is the storcx guide to the do’s and don’ts of money pooling.”
1. MAKE YOUR GIFT-PAGE AS CLEAR & INFORMATIVE AS POSSIBLE
Remember to explain in your gift page why you are money-pooling. Not only would the recipient like one big present rather than lots of little ones, but you are also saving the contributors time and the difficulty of deciding what to give. Be careful when phrasing your request – no one likes to be bullied, but make a suggestion to contribute, remind them it is not obligatory! Don’t forget the fact that you are reducing waste too, not just in wrapping paper and card, but also by avoiding all the wasted presents that may never get opened or played with!
2. UPLOAD A LINK OR IMAGE
When creating your gift raising page it is always helpful to show your recipients what you are thinking of buying. Uploading a photo or link to the gift in question is a tangible way to help people feel that they are part of the process and have a cognitive understanding of what they are actually buying their friend.
3. BE CONSIDERATE TO EVERYONE’S BUDGET
Even though the end gift may have a hefty price tag, you have to remember that different people can only budget a certain amount, whereas others have more to burn. Take this into consideration when sending out your gift page allowing a spread figure for people to pay what they can afford. At the end of the day the only thing that really matters is that you spend what you would have done on a single present but the recipient ends up with the gift of their dreams!
4. GIVE PEOPLE TIME
No-one likes a panic buy and people may want to think about whether to join the pot or not. Allow a few weeks if possible to get people involved, STORCX will send out friendly cute reminders to your guests taking out the panic and worry for you!
5. REMEMBER TO SAY THANKS
Don’t forget to write a message in the auto-thanks box! This undoubtedly makes all contributors feel happier about parting with their funds!
6. MESSAGE YOUR GUESTS
WITH THE FINAL TALLY & KEEP YOU CONTRIBUTORS INFORMED
Remember to tell your guests once the contribution date has closed what has been raised, if you have met your goal & when you will be giving the recipient their gift! They may not have organized it but should be considered p[art of the giving process and having donated towards it, deserve to be kept informed!
7. INFORM THE RECIPIENT
On the present giving day make sure you have copied all the messages form the contributors to the host. This enables the receiver to thank EVERYONE who made a generous contribution.
8. ENCOURAGE THE RECEIVER
TO THANK & SEND PHOTOS
This may not need to be said but it does no harm to remind to share the delight of receiving the gift with everyone who contributed to its very existence!
With sustainability and climate change firm on everyone’s mind – we have the highly influential scientist and Chairman of Client Earth Howard Covington giving us his thoughts on Climate Change and sustainability.
Q&A WITH HOWARD COVINGTON
S: IN SIMPLE TERMS HOW IS CLIMATE CHANGE AFFECTING THE PLANET?
HC: It is increasing the frequency of wild things happening: storms, floods, droughts, forest fires, ice, melt sea level rise, coral reef destruction.
S: ECO-FRIENDLY AND SUSTAINABILITY IS HOT ON EVERYONE’S LIPS, IF YOU COULD GIVE US YOUR 3 TOPS THINGS TO CHANGE DAY TO DAY WHAT WOULD THEY BE?
HC: Eat less red meat, use the most energy efficient light bulbs and appliances, get an electric car.
S: THERE ARE A LOT OF DIFFERENT CAMPAIGNS FOR CLIMATE CHANGE, WHICH ONE IS YOUR FAVOURITE AND WHY?
HC: ClientEarth because it converts words into actions by forcing governments and companies to obey environmental laws.
S: ELECTRIC CARS? ARE THEY REALLY BETTER FOR THE ENVIRONMENT?
HC: Much better. The city air will improve dramatically when people switch from diesel to electric.
S: HOW CAN WE EDUCATE OURSELVES AND OUR CHILDREN ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE? ARE THERE ANY PROGRAMMES YOU WOULD SUGGEST?
HC: Read ‘Guardians of the Planet’ by Clive Gifford & Watch David Attenborough Seven worlds, One Planet when it comes out and also Blue Planet II. There are also some interesting Ted Talks on the subject. In addition- join Client Earth for our talks on Climate Change and the environment- they are free and always interesting.
S: PLEASE TELL US ABOUT CLIENT EARTH AND YOUR INVOLVEMENT.
HC: Client Earth is a group of 120 or so highly talented and dedicated lawyers. Because of Client Earth’s legal work, people can see judges ordering governments and companies to take better care of their citizens by cleaning up the environment, preserving nature and reducing carbon emissions. In Europe we bring cases directly. In China we train prosecutors on how to bring cases. Client Earth gives people real hope. Through its work in Europe and China it is directly improving the lives of more than a billion people. I help Client Earth where I can.
S: GIVEN THE FACT YOU ARE A FIGURE HEAD FOR CLIMATE CHANGE, WHAT PRACTICE DO YOU ADOPT WHEN GIFTING?
HC: I’m very simple. I look for leverage. I want a modest gift to produce an enormous impact. That is exactly what Client Earth does.
S: WHAT IS THE BEST GIFT YOU HAVE EVER RECEIVED?
HC: The Justices of the UK’s Supreme Court pronouncing that the British government had to obey its own laws and clean up London’s filthy air.
