This month we are paying homage to the interiors industry. This time of year we often feel that now the darker nights are drawing in earlier and weekends are being spent more inside than outdoors, we may start to turn our attention to the walls around us and realise we are in dire need of a refresh, or perhaps even a more severe renovation.
When exploring the world of design and interiors it can become a mind field of information, wavering cost projections, colour schemes, lighting architecture, building manuals, paint swatches, fabric samples, all of which can be very overwhelming and somewhat terrifying! Do not fear as this edition we are lucky enough to have Brigitte Spinocchia Freund, Founder and Director of Spinocchia Freund, the acclaimed super stylish developer/interior designer to give her thoughts on interiors and development.
S: WHAT DO YOU FIND MOST CHALLENGING ABOUT DESIGNING A HOME?
B: Quite honestly, I don’t! I live and breathe design. I enjoy the design process from the initial concept stages which is connective time with a client and their family members. For me the key to successful design is really understanding the client brief, the way a client lives and their unique lifestyle needs. It’s an enjoyable ever evolving process.
S: HOW DO YOU COME UP WITH INSPIRATION TO DESIGN A SCHEME FOR A HOME?
B: I travel and have a love for art and design. This is constantly inspiring me. Through understanding what is new and exciting and with a clear picture of the client’s DNA I design a scheme usually with a focal piece of furniture or art as the starting point. From here we build with colour, texture and form.
S: WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST AMBITIOUS PROJECT TO DATE?
B: A lot of my projects with private clients rely upon my discretion, so I am unable to discuss them. Of the pieces I can discuss, one I particularly love is an installation I commissioned for a pool space by a Cuban art collective called Los Carpinteros that sees multiple objects ‘exploding’ over a large void with incredible effect. I also recently commissioned a 4x6m painted installation with the artist Richard Long for a landmark development and there are several more ambitious collaborations in the pipeline.
S: AND THE MOST SATISFYING?
B: Within my design practice Spinocchia Freund has become known for ‘attention to detail’. These details are all bespoke designed and site specific; the creation of these is exceptionally satisfying. Examples include unique forged metalwork, bespoke carpentry, collaborative pieces, specialist wallpapers and customised paint finishes. My passion for ceramics and textiles overlaps into my design work as I design bespoke tableware to create the perfect table for my clients. A recent collaboration with Mary Katrantzou for her 10-year anniversary in fashion saw us design a dinner service together. It’s such a vibrant, happy collection that was so fun to create; we have made it available to special order.
S: WE ALL LIKE A QUICK FIX, WHAT IS THE FASTEST WAY TO REFRESH A SPACE?
B: I would say introduce something new into a room; this could mean re-upholstering a beloved sofa, replacing a coffee-table or a new pair of lamps. If you collect objects, I’d suggest moving them into a new arrangement, in a new location. This lets you see your favourite pieces in a whole new light, literally.
S: WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS YOUR PERSONAL DESIGNING STYLE?
B: I design using contrasting elements. For example, using 18th Century panelling as a backdrop to modern art furniture or an antique sofa from the 1930’s reupholstered in custom design woven fabric. The effect becomes both striking and unique.
S: ANY TIPS ON HOW TO MAXIMIZE WARDROBE SPACE?
B: For a fashion lover like me this is a tricky question. I’m saving favourite and classic pieces for my two daughters. And I donate good quality pieces that I no longer wear to my local charity shop.
S: LONDON IS RENOWNED FOR THEIR SMALL GARDENS; HOW DO YOU MAKE THE MOST OUT OF A SMALL CITY GARDEN?
B: By using sculptural furniture and evergreen planting creating an inviting space to drink a coffee outdoors, even on a bright winter’s day.
S: SOME HOMES ARE NOT COSY, AND YOU HAVE THIS AMAZING KNACK TO MAKE A SPACE FABULOUS AND COSY, WHAT IS YOUR TRICK?
B: Early on in a design, one element of the lighting scheme is considered to create this effect. Additionally, I work with the idea of creating intimate gathering areas even within larger spaces. I choose comfortable furniture that invites you to sit with your legs curled underneath you and focus on your partner, children, friends or guests.
S: WHAT IS THE BEST THING YOU HAVE EVER BOUGHT FOR YOUR HOME?
B: That’s nearly impossible to answer …. art, art and more art in whatever form it comes!
S: WHAT IS THE BEST GIFT YOU EVER RECEIVED?
B: My family – I’m so blessed!
