Summer Styling

Summer Styling
15th July 2019 James D

So summer is here and for most we are embarking on a summer adventure abroad. No matter if we are away for 1 week or 10, the struggle is real when we are trying to squeeze a myriad of outfits into our case/s. We also have to take into consideration the fact that for some a bikini has not been warn for at least 6-12 months, we have forgotten what a Mediterranean breeze entails, and how hot is 25 degrees and how does it feel? We have dedicated this edition to be your packing bible – what to wear to the beach, be it beach ready or not; How to conquer heat and humidity whilst looking chic, summer evening style & effectively how to pack the perfect getaway wardrobe. Thankfully we are lucky enough to have London based stylist guru Sophie Goodwin guide us through this daunting task and provide tricks, ideas and inspiration when packing to help keep life simple.

Plan a long time in advance; you’ll never have all you need. I always have a last-minute panic; forgotten dry cleaning, enough clean underwear, travel size products etc. You’ll need more pyjamas and swim stuff (Mara Hoffman is fab) than you think.

Suitcase wise, Globetrotter in cream with a brown trim is really chic. And get a load of waterproof zip lock compartments to put inside for underwear, swimwear, bathroom stuff etc. That way you’ll avoid mess and won’t even need to unpack out of the individual sections if you’re doing lots of pit stops. AWAY are very robust and practical as another option, personalise yours for fun, and the phone charging port is invaluable.

A mini hand-held steamer is essential (I use them on shoots) Saves begging the concierge for an iron and dismantling your room. Morplan make the best. And I avoid taking too many fabrics that crease badly, Pippa Holt kaftans are brilliant (I belt mine) and slip dresses in loads of colours can do for the beach and dinner.

Headbands / headscarves and a texture spray are essential for hair that will basically only ever beach dry. If in doubt just scrape it back. Make up is totally different in the sun too – I avoid eye-make up and use a light shimmer on the skin (it’s actually a gold face mask By Peter Thomas Roth leave on, fab on the collar bones too) Big sunnies (Fendi / Saint Lauren) and I don’t take heels on holiday – feels wrong somehow. Miu Miu sandals are great, plus a couple of pairs of Supergas) Love a pair of big vintage earrings (from an amazing shop in Paris at 32 Rue Jacobs) and Hunting Season bag. Dye eyelashes and brows before you leave. Aloe Vera for sunburn.

Take a vanish stain removal stick, safety pins, tit tape, an invisible high waisted pants and a strapless bra.

Men need deck shoes, t shirts in blue, white and grey, espadrilles (to be found whilst away) linen shirts from Uniqlo, fun swim shorts (Le Sirenuse Positano/ Solid & Striped). Nothing too trendy or fruity, men look sexiest when classic. Paul Newman / Cary Grant vibe. Ray-Ban’s, Hermes fragrance (travel size) and loads of moisturiser you can share (Augustinus Bader is a hit with everyone and makes you look ten years younger)

Q. What is the perfect present?

A. The perfect present is something I’d forget to do myself. Summer play list (or I’ll be listening to Billy Joel on repeat) a good book to get me off my phone, or checking me for my flight online. Admin is not my strong suit.

This issue we also want to make an ode and reminder to all the fabulous UK activities that are going on if you are not escaping to warmer climes. There is no better time to explore England and all its glory than July, usually the best the British weather has to offer, full advantage should be taken to explore. Tennis fan or not now is the time to make a visit to Wimbledon, quintessentially British and a true experience of what a British summer is. Put on your lawn tennis best, eat strawberries & cream whilst enjoying a glass of Pimm’s and watch the greats battle it out at arguably the best of all the grand slams, a true must if never done before. If you are not a sports enthusiast take a trip to Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival. See the grandeur of Henry VIII’s palace at this wonderful flower show filled with entertainment and fun! As this is the time to showcase England’s beautiful gardens no UK summer would be complete without a visit to the magic that is Kew. Not only are these a fantastic display of floral delights but for 5 days from 9-14th July Kew The Music runs where you can enjoy the true English summer whilst listening to some of your classic favourites such as Rick Astley & Beverley Knight play live.

We are thrilled to announce STORCX has been nominated for the second year running for The Good Web Guide Awards 2019, in the categories for Best Start Up, Most Useful & Luxury.
